A breastfeeding diet should be nutritious and well-balanced. It should boost a new mother’s energy level so that she can take care of the baby and herself easily. A poor diet affects the mother’s health more than it affects the baby’s health. A breastfeeding mother should take 500 extra calories but they should be good fats. Taking extra calories doesn’t mean that a nursing mother can eat sweet cakes and pastries. Incorporate fresh green vegetables in your diet. Drink fresh juices and water whenever you feel thirsty. Avoid taking alcohol beverages when you are breastfeeding. If you want to drink then wait for at least two hours before you nurse again and drink lots of water. Limit your caffeine intake to two cups during the whole day. Do no smoke at all and do not let others smoke near the baby.
