The Pros and Cons of Wind Power

As the world population increases, our fossil fuel resources are running out. Using fossil fuels creates trouble for our environment and renewable energy sources are definitely the future. Wind power is a green energy resource and it is already being used across the country. As an environmentally friendly resource, there are advantages and disadvantages of wind power and there are scientists and researchers constantly trying to work to overcome the disadvantages.

The main form of wind power is created by wind turbines or windmills. These turbines convert kinetic energy into mechanical power which in turn powers generators and other items which need electrical power. Wind turbines are highly advanced, much more technologically advanced than their fossil fuel counterparts.

The pros of wind power are plentiful. Its main advantages are the fact that it’s totally renewable and non-polluting. It’s a completely free resource and doesn’t need to be filtered through any systems which would cost you lots of money. As time as gone on, the cost of wind turbines, and their installation and maintenance has dropped steadily. It truly is an affordable and green form of energy.

There are also many cons of wind power. It can only be generated when the wind is blowing so you need a secondary backup power source. These backup batteries can be very expensive and need replacing periodically. Some critics also claim that wind turbines are excessively noisy and an eyesore on our otherwise beautiful rural landscape. This is purely a personal opinion and can’t be considered factual. Likewise, some bird preservation groups believe that birds are being badly affected by wind turbines. There are no figures to suggest that a large number of birds are injured or killed by wind turbines but it is often sensible to ensure you aren’t planning to erect one in a particular species’ migration path.

There is no perfect form of energy. I’m sure you can think of positives and negatives of coal and solar power pros and cons as well as these issues with wind power. It is a wholly personal choice which energy source you believe would suit your family best.
